Sony Ericsson’s Entertainment Night
You don’t get many variety nights these days across London, or, in fact anywhere. The only one that comes to mind is the inane annual shenanigans for the royal family.
So when I was invited to a night of comedy, singing, dancing… and errr beer, with the promise of no Britain’s Got Talent winner to appear before me, I hopped at the chance.
Based at the Pigalle Club in Piccadilly Circus Sony Ericsson, put on the evening hosted by Irish funnyman and comedy show panellist regular Ed Byrne. Anyone who manages to introduce himself, encourage a round of applause to commend himself and slag off James Blunt in one routine is in my good book immediately.
Apart from acting as a compere between his own material, Ed also introduced an incredible singer I, perhaps naively, had never heard of by the name of Alice Russell. Her acoustic rendition of Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy was the highlight of the night. The only thing that could divert my eyes from her powerful and genuinely soulful performance was the violinist alongside her who I’d bet my Sony Ericsson on is the white brother of Cee-Lo!
Next up was musical comedian Tim Minchin… who sang a song about taking your plastic bags to the supermarket. Yes, you read that correctly. Sadly he won’t find himself topping the UK Singles Chart, but he may well get a slot at Bob Geldof’s next world-saving extravaganza.
And finally the culmination of the night had arrived and I wondered what was going to entertain me. I was just thinking that Sony Ericsson had treated me to a thoroughly entertaining evening with no token Britain’s Got Talent winner, France’s Got Talent victor Salah waltzed on stage! However, to my surprise he was fantastic. His unique brand of body popping amalgamated with breakdancing and the ability to sound like he had a rubber duck stuck in his throat would’ve given Diversity a dance for their money.
